A Connecticut nonprofit that provides after-school programs for at-risk girls is getting a big boost from a local business group.

The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation has awarded the Stonington Community Center a $1,500 grant to expand its after-school programs for girls in grades four through eight, reports the Hartford Courant.

The center also got a $1,000 grant to buy new toys, puzzles, and playsets for its youngest patrons, reports Patch.com.

"This is our largest year yet for submitted applications and a record number of awarded funds," says the chair of the foundation's board.

The foundation, which has given more than $1.5 million to 51 nonprofit organizations since 2002, says the need for grants is high and it is "proud to distribute grant funding to 51 regional non-profit organizations, which will in turn impact thousands of our neighbors in need."
