Celebrating 10 Years of Children'S of Alabama Clinical Scholars

It's not every day that a hospital is named the nation's top medical facility, but that's exactly what's happened at Alabama's Children's of Alabama.

The Children's of Alabama Clinical Scholars Initiative, a year-long program from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing and Children's of Alabama, is now in its 10th year and has seen 132 nurses complete the program, which focuses on improving quality of care and building leadership capacity, reports the UAB School of Nursing.

"For these nurses, the Scholars Initiative is a transformative journey where knowledge meets practice with a focus on cultivating bedside nurse leaders who aspire to elevate health care through evidence-based excellence," says the program's co-director, associate professor and assistant Dean for Graduate Clinical Education Tedra Smith.

The program helps participants hone the abilities essential for steering teams, guiding initiatives, and spearheading quality improvement endeavors.

Participants form teams early in the program based on similar areas of interest for improvement initiatives, working to identify gaps in practice within their clinical locations and develop quality improvement initiatives.

They also form teams and work to provide additional resources, training, and burnout recognition among providers.

The far-reaching impact of the scholars' efforts has been seen through professional nursing conferences
