A high school in Kerala, India, has been named the "most innovative" in its category by the state's education department, the Times of India reports.

According to a press release, Udayamperoor Higher Secondary School won the district-level award after presenting 10 "novel programs" at a block resource center.

"The idea is to give extra attention to students who need special care and subject them to social auditing so that there is a transparency about the whole process," says a faculty member at the school, which has around 3,300 students.

Among the school's programs: "One Classroom Turns a Book," "One Postal Day," "Children's Day," " Kerala Formation Day," and "Haritham Anandam," in which 100 students were given the task of ensuring proper disposal of plastic waste in 50 households.

"Collective efforts of students, teachers, parents, and the school management are at the heart of the success of the innovative programs," the press release says.

"For the forthcoming academic year, we are planning more such programs including the one to ensure that none of our students leave the school without being able to read, write, and knowing the basics of mathematics," the faculty member says.
