A high school student in New Zealand has been awarded $5,000 for her artand it's not for her degree.

Anna Wilkinson, a student at St.Oran's College Lower Hutt, was the winner of the Artstart Foundation's first scholarship competition, Stuff.co.nz reports.

The 18-year-old, who's in her first year of law school at the University of Otago, says the scholarship "gives me the confidence to push my artistic boundaries and to explore my creativity."

Wilkinson, who won the "People's Choice" award at the foundation's first exhibition in Wellington, will receive $1,000 for art supplies, $1,000 in mentorship, and the opportunity to have her work displayed at a gallery and sold.

Artstart was started in 2018 by Charlotte Sherratt and Sophie Paterson to support high school artists in New Zealand.

Since then, they've given more than 30 students a total of $3,300 to help kickstart their art careers, per a press release.

Voting is currently underway on the foundation's website.
