"Air pollution threatens our health and that of our planet," says the Brussels minister for the environment.

"It is our duty to do everything we can so that the people of Brussels can breathe clean air and live in a healthy environment."

Michael Bloomberg, UN secretary-general's special envoy on climate change and founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, says air pollution kills hundreds of thousands of people in Europe every year, including nearly 9,000 in Belgium alone, per the European Environment Agency.

Now Bloomberg and the government of Brussels-Capital Region are teaming up to create the second phase of the Brussels Clean Air Partnership, which will "provide additional support for academia, civil society, and the public sector to implement a wide range of projects and concrete actions to reduce air pollution and traffic-related greenhouse gas emissions," the New York Times reports.

Among the projects: a modeling tool to forecast and map air quality in public spaces, the creation of an incubator for low-emission logistics projects, and efforts to educate children and the elderly about the health effects of air pollution.
