Invest in Climate-Smart Agriculture to Combat Malnutrition in Uganda

The people of the Democratic Republic of Congo's Bunyoro region are among the world's most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, especially when it comes to food security and nutrition, the Guardian reports.

According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, the regionwhich includes parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwandais among the world's hardest-hit by food shortages, frequent droughts, and floods, as well as by the effects of climate change itself.

In fact, the malnutrition rate in the region has more than doubled in the past five years.

"The consequences are dire, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women, who bear the brunt of nutritional deficiencies," the Proven Foundation, a humanitarian group, says in a press release.

The foundation is trying to help the people of Bunyoro become "climate-smart" farmers, growing crops that are resistant to climate change, as well as diversify their diets to include more nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and fish.

"By harnessing nature-based solutions and indigenous knowledge, farmers in Bunyoro can mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change while simultaneously improving food security and nutrition outcomes," the press release says.
