When the Providence Performing Arts Center was looking for a new artistic director earlier this year, it was looking for someone who would be willing to take on the role of artistic director of its fall production of Madame Butterfly.

That person has now been named, and the New York Daily News reports that the man is none other than 72-year-old John LaCorte, a native of France who has lived in the US for more than 30 years.

LaCorte was artistic director of the original run of Madame Butterfly, which ran from 2004 to 2006, and the current production, which is set to open in September, is his first directorial effort.

LaCorte says he's "thrilled" to be the new artistic director.

"I've always wanted to be a director," he tells the Providence Journal.

"I've always wanted to work with the community.

I've always wanted to do something that's going to be meaningful to the community."

LaCorte says he's "thrilled to be a part of this new phase of the Providence Performing Arts Center" and that the new artistic director will be someone "who's going to bring a fresh perspective to what we're doing."
