The California Dental Association Foundation is accepting nominations for its annual Humanitarian Award, which it calls "the highest honor a dentist can receive."
The awardwhich comes with a $1,500 donation to the recipient's charity of choiceis given to dentists who have shown leadership and commitment to improving oral health.
Nominations are being accepted through May 31 at the CDA Foundation's website.
To be eligible for the award, a dentist must be an active or retired dentist in California, be at least 50 years old, and be a member of the CDA.
The recipient must also be a member of the CDA and be willing to donate to a nonprofit of the recipient's choice.
The award was first given in 2008 to dentists who had "broadly and positively impacted oral health and improved human condition," per the CDA.
The late Dr. Andrew Soderstrom, who received the award himself in 2015, is the namesake for this year's award.
Soderstrom "was known for his tireless efforts meet the dental needs of children, regardless of their families' economic situation," per the CDA.
"His leadership was also apparent during a long-fought battle to fluoridate community water in his hometown of Modesto."
