Uae'S Cop28 Will Amplify Collective Climate Action

Delegates from almost 200 countries are meeting in the United Arab Emirates this week for the 28th Conference of the Parties to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the New York Times takes a look at the key issues at play.

The main goal of the conference is to agree on how to keep global warming at 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) or less, rather than the 3.6 degrees Celsius (8.5 degrees Fahrenheit) that scientists say is necessary to prevent the worst effects of climate change.

The UAE, which is hosting the conference, says it wants to make that goal a reality by cutting emissions by 43% from 1990 levels by 2030, and by doubling renewable energy production to 60% by 2030, reports the National.

But the US, which has not signed the Paris Agreement, says it won't be attending the conference because it doesn't want to give the impression that it's caving to pressure from China and India, the world's top two carbon emitters.

The Times also takes a look at the political issues at play, including the possibility of a Green Climate Fund to help developing countries deal with climate change.

The conference runs from Nov.

30 to Dec.

12.
