"I believe this type of event was long overdue," says the communications director for Winchester, Va.,'s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which hosted an event in September designed to connect nonprofits and faith-based groups in the area.
The Community Connect and Serve event featured booths from nearly 40 nonprofit groups, as well as a website where people could find volunteer opportunities, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.
"I was very moved by how much people genuinely care about their neighbors, their desires to reach out to those in need, and their efforts to make a difference in the lives of our community members," Melinda Topham says.
The goal of the event was "to bless the lives of those in need and work together to make our community a stronger, healthier place," she says.
