The Scripps Howard Foundation believes that the future of journalism lies in investigative reporting.
The University of Maryland and Arizona State University will open 'Howard Centers,' which Scripps says 'will be multidisciplinary, graduate-level programs focused on training the next generation of reporters through hands-on investigative journalism projects.'
The Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at ASU were among 13 schools that competed for the grants.The Howard Centers will also encourage journalism schools to recruit students who didn't graduate from journalism programs to enter investigative reporting. The grant hopes to encourage students who come from other majors and bring a range of expertise to use those skills in journalism.
